WHAT'S THE ICON OF YOUR SHOP?
What is it then? Logo or icon or mark? They all have differences, believe it or not, but I’m not going to make it boring by giving you the conceptual definition for us designers. Instead I’m going to adapt the concept as close as I can to what’s important for retail business owners.
SO WHAT’S AN ICON?
An icon is the mark that will make your shop recognizable. This mark can be a part of the logo, but the logo is not necessarily just an icon.
Technically, a logo is the combination of elements that compose the identity of a company: the icon, the name, slogan/description. The confusion develops because many companies have managed to be recognized by just the mark/icon, or just the name in a particular beautiful font.
An icon should be simple and at the same time convey the main purpose of the shop. In one graphic, it projects the idea of what the shop sells and supports what it stands for.
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT?
It’s practical to use an icon because it’s an easy way to apply your shop’s identity in different materials: online shops use them on avatars, stamps can be made with them to put on receipts and shipments, or they can be put on stickers to promote the shop’s products and brand.
HOW DO YOU DEFINE YOUR MARK?
Well to start, you can look back at the elements that we have talked about before and they will guide you on the first choices like what colors to pick and what theme to keep. Then after, you can browse thru icon collections and pick the ones that represents the story of your brand.
Your icon can very simple, like a palm tree or a seashell for a beach theme or a diamond for a jewelry store but I dare you to be more creative and choose an icon that is original and unique to your story. This is the one element that takes a little bit more of an artist approach, so if you feel like you need help creating your own, this is when a graphic designer can help you thru the process.
